Welcome to the WaveRunners!  The Westwood Farms swim team is a summer recreational activity for children in the development.  We hope to improve each child’s swimming ability, foster team spirit, encourage competition and most of all have FUN.  Each child is responsible for his/her own personal behavior, and is expected to show respect for the coaches, fellow team members, officials and the opposing team.

Eligibility

Registration is open to any Westwood Farms resident ages 5 through 18 as of June 1, 2011.  Although we welcome children learning to swim, please understand this is not a “learn to swim” program. However, our coaches love children and will be in the water teaching basic strokes to the little ones. We expect to have around 100 team members and 5 coaches. All swimmers must be able to propel themselves from one end of the pool to the other. 8 and under must make one length of the pool and children 9 and above must swim two lengths of the pool.  Holding lane lines is okay and we’ve never had a swimmer fail this test.

Parent Involvement

Did you know it takes 50 parent volunteers to run a home swim meet and 20 to run an away meet?  Your help is vital!  Each family (you too Dads) must work four  meets.  Also, if your child(ren) swims in the Strongsville Swim League (SSL) Championship Meet on Saturday, July 16, each family MUST work at the meet.  Registration will NOT be accepted without a completed parent volunteer form.  The meets are split into shifts to accommodate all parents.  At registration, you will need to sign up for various swim meet jobs. Please note: Swimmers of parents that don’t fulfill jobs requirement will not be allowed to compete in the meets

The 2011 WaveRunners registration fee is $90 per swimmer under 15 years-old and $60 per swimmer 15-18 years-old.

Communication

Mailboxes will be assigned by family and can be found by the lifeguard table on the pool deck.  Each swimmer will have a slot in these file boxes.  Please check your slot during the season for ribbons etc. All other meet information such as event changes, practice cancellations, champs meet info.etc will be distributed via e-mail or from our website:  www.wwfwaverunners.org. Please make use of the website for announcements and general swim team information.  If you fill in your email address on the registration form, you will also receive messages through email.  This seemed to work best last season so we will continue using e-mail for updates

Meet Attendance

Every swimmer must notify coaches if they are NOT going to attend a particular meet. Notify them Friday morning before Tuesday meets and Tuesday morning before Thursday meets.  This is to help the coaches set lineups and prevent mass changes and confusion at the meets.

CHAMPS MEET ON JULY 16

Champs is the season ending meet against all the league teams and is held at the Rec Center.  The meet traditionally starts at 9:00 AM and runs until about 3:00 PM.  Team warm-up times will be distributed via e-mail and the website when the information becomes available.  This is a very fun meet for the swimmers.  The season ending awards party will be held in the clubhouse at 5:00 PM on Sunday, July 17 the day after Champs.  The team will supply pizza and drinks.  Please bring a salad, side dish or dessert to share.  The coaches will recognize each swimmer during the event and present medals and ribbons from Champs.

We are very excited that our entire coaching staff is returning this season.  Colton Kawiecki, a freshman at Miami University, returns as the WaveRunners Head Coach. We welcome back Brad Ludwig, a senior at St, Ignatius High School and a fourth-year coach.  Returning for her third year is Strongsville High School varsity swimmer Tia Simpson.  Tia has just completed her junior year swimming for the Mustangs and brings many years of USA swimming experience with her.  Also returning is talented Strongsville High School varsity swimmer Madison Kawiecki.  Madison, also a junior brings 2 years of coaching experience and several years of volunteer coaching to the WaveRunners.  Rejoining our staff for his second season is Walsh Jesuit High School swimmer and longtime WaveRunner Michael Petras. This is a very talented coaching staff with many years of High School, USA, and SSL swimming experience.  Our coaching staff will be working expressly on developing and correcting strokes, starts, turns and technique this season.
